Recently, Gustavo Santaolalla, the composer for The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II's soundtracks has started releasing a new series of videos about his work named "The 1001 Worlds of Gustavo Santaolalla" and the first one is about The Last of Us.
He mentions he had been waiting for a gig like that, since his son is a gamer and he had always watched him play, but never found something that matched what he was looking for, until The Last of Us showed up. He appreciated the opportunity since the game mixes different genres and also tells a unique, emotional story. To Gustavo, it was a match made in heaven because his music is very emotional sounding as well.
What makes the main theme for "The Last of Us" sound so unique is an instrument coming from Argentina, called ronroco, which is a little bit like a banjo.
